musical suffer from incontinence, so it is one of the most prolific in the music of our country. A Javier Limón no label takes the star producer, but he wants his latest work, Women of water-where collaborate Buika, Estrella Morente, La Shica or Eleftheria Arvanitaki ", will be remembered for his work as composer.
Pablo Giraldo Interview

SHANGAY EXPRESS: How did the idea for Women of water ? JAVIER
LEMON: After working with Eleftheria , I realized that a number of things that all countries bordering the Mediterranean have in common. From there, I started looking for these countries the typical songs forgotten or hidden issues that are some gems scrotumtightening and that inspired me to compose. When I found the code I started looking at the performers.
SE: There's nothing like pulling agenda for this disc.
JL: course. I have many friends and all my staff are women, from the sound engineer to my manager. I think in the world of music, and flamenco and jazz in particular, women are undervalued. It seems they can only sing and dance. I I have a very natural relationship with them, and ninety percent of the records I produce are of female artists from Victoria Abril to Luz Casal. I do not know why, but I do better with them. Would have to call some psychoanalysts to explain it ... This album is dedicated specifically to women who could not sing in it, because, for example, I wanted to participate in the disc Iranian interpreter finally could not. Not that I am a pain in the ass to be doing cansautor propaganda, but I wanted to clarify the situation of Middle Eastern singers. Beyond that, all the singers responded that I asked. It's been satisfaction, and is now being crazy coordinate all because we will organize concerts with twelve cities like Madrid and Barcelona. I usually make life difficult enough with these things.
SE: Mix bulerías soniquetes of Kurdistan is a rather strange combination ...
JL: Yes, but I like to mix all of that and the result is not a pain. When I finish a disc may take a year or two until I can again hear the relaxed without turning to studio tricks I've used. However, I have heard this from the outset by the sophistication of the proposal: twelve songs with twelve pieces of artists.
SE: You tend to get involved in several projects at once. Do you suffer from hyperactivity musical?
JL: From the musical and non musical. I am a guy quite hyper, but I do not have the gift of good taste. My only solution is to generate a lot of work to do screen and choose the best. There are many projects that I'd be, but I realize that my successes are sometimes based on say no to certain things. Now I want to dedicate myself more to the creative and composition to production.
SE: Does it bother you identified before as a producer than as a composer?
JL: bothered me before I was called a producer, because in the world of music is linked to the projects in a different way than it does in the movies. The music producer would be like the film director, decides on the repertory, performers and participate in the creative process. Executive produce your product is very good because it forces you to keep your feet on the ground. When you know the cost of an instrument, it takes away all this mystical nonsense with the artists and can be dangerous. The depth in art is relative, so I like the pragmatic people, as Lady GaGa or Paco de Lucia .
SE: Did you come to Lady GaGa's musical interests?
JL: No. What I have studied is the fact that all the world to study it. A musical level I do not care, I do not bring anything, does what any girl in the Bronx of fourteen who plays and sings. To me what surprises me is the ladygaguismo, that interests me.
SE: You took part in the assembly of anonymous Valentine . Are you still interested in musical theater?
JL: I am very interested, but the negative part of musical theater in Spain is that they tend to choose songs famous and write about them a script usually boring and pointless. Would be called the Anglo-Saxon and German, where the music serves the story. The big score to settle in our country is to compose our own music and myths.
SE: What other projects do you prepare?
JL: Women After water will fire Man, where I'll go musically over the Middle East, and I would like to invite and Jorge Drexler Antonio Carmona .

carried in a pocket calendar and the other a notebook. The one is full of projects and the other from letrillas bulerías. Javier Limón and activity are synonymous. No to compose, produce, travel ... and all without neglecting his own albums. Just given birth to 'Women water ', which brings together twelve female voices to interpret twelve songs they debut new formula, which unites flamenco and Mediterranean music. To the sound of his guitar blue, his compositions are interpreted by singers such as Carmen Linares, Estrella Morente and Montse Cortés, but singers from other cultures like the Portuguese Mariza, the Israeli Kurdish Aynur or Yasmin Levy. Everything is steeped in flamenco, but a flamingo facing the other side of their own ancestors.
| |
And on that agenda so full what's flamenco ?
Sandra Carrasco, a global project on Carmen Amaya that some of his films, and a flamenco I'm doing to Anoushka Shankar, Norah Jones' sister. You do not know how to do the fandango with the sitar!
Yes, I did a collaboration with pianist Pedro Ricardo Miño ...
Yes, we have put this issue on the record, I'm changing the palms. He married the day after tomorrow and four days are here recorded.
we go to 'Women of water'?
Oh, yeah!
What is the starting point of this album?
| | | "I think we've done a lot of fusion of flamenco and Afro-Cuban music " |
I am not guitarist. And that I'm excited to speak at Flamenco-world.com. What I do is play a little guitar as accompaniment. What I've always done has been composing flamenco, which is a difficult thing, is not the same compose a song bulerías. It starts as a disk creation. Lately I've been traveling the Mediterranean, working with Yasmin Eleftheria ... and enrich the body was asking me to that side, not so much to jazz and latin jazz. I think we've done a lot of fusion between flamenco and Afro-Cuban and we have ignored everything else. Flamenco has two or three centuries, is sixty bossa nova, jazz is a hundred-odd years ... but there are songs in the Mediterranean than three thousand years. I was interested in the world of microtone, something that exists only flamenco expressive approach, but not written. Finally, I chose to write with these elements. I think it's good before a work, placed a bit different. If not, you can get a kind of pornographic movie-of-horror-comedy. Is this what's going on? When I had made, I thought the performers. On the one hand, flourishes the musicians had to do as Hüsnü, and singing, for women. Ninety percent of the records that I come from women.
Javier Limón in the video "Water mysterious' of 'Women of water' |
What was the criteria for selecting these voices?
I missed any. It was my twelve favorite and twelve I said yes. The only one I got then was Aynur, who suggested to me my friend Sinan in Turkey. With the others, had worked with each and was very easy.
To each his subject had prepared for him?
course, I was thinking this topic is for Sandra or that I could sing very well Montse Cortes, or that I will change some parts in order to get better Genara. For example, 'Only You' by Sandra Genara first recorded it, but ended up with 'Olive Street. "
There is a specific weight of the flamenco voices ...
From the voices and everything. In the end, I am a flamenco musician. I can not disguise a producer of cheap pop, but in the end, I bulerías lyricist, is what I do. ( and teaches the notebook ... ). If flamenco is taken only as a folk repertoire, it is true that my discs are not purely flamenco. Considering only flamenco is every disk that, together with their subjects, placed between parentheses soleá, seguiriya, bulería ... But if Flemish language is understood as a musical, all my records are flamenco, especially conceptually.
most important thing that brings flamenco musical level, apart from the issue expressive, emotive and interpretive, is improvisation of the structure. Flemish party that has one hundred guys and nobody knows what letter comes, but when it starts all follow and when it finishes, topped all the time. Although the lyrics heard for the first time. The structure does not improvise jazz. You have a wheel of the same song repeated over and over again, but you can not stay on the Do two bars if he is one. So the flamenco jazz musicians are crazy.
Although this disc structures are a bit changed. There are names club as "bouzouki flamenco" or "Turkish pasodoble."
That I have invented everything, hahaha . Enrique Morente once told me that if I did a song and did not know the club or not belong to any, I invent it. Be the first song of that suit, which is fucking great. He told me about the Mary, which is a song actually is not deep enough to be a stick, is almost a point or two. I I made one for Ramón el Portugués , that of "the bull of the moon." Then the recorded Pepe de Lucía and four or five more, but Marian still a little song. That stick, unless something very soleá or beast, is relative.
How react off the flamenco singers, when you say, for example, Aynur bulerías who is singing?
More than bulerias rhythm is bulerías. They love it, but that's in them, is impressive. For example, with Anoushka Shankar the other day, I wrote the harmony which had to drop the fandango. He started playing and was a perfect fandangazo. Not only because it fell on the note, but because he did were super sentences like flamenco. I told him I had played flamenco. And he said he had played the raga as his father's (Ravi Shankar ), pure Indian music. Aynur, rather than what she sang bulerías, I wondered why we called bulería that because in Kurdistan was called differently. That happens with the famous African tanguillo, that is in all cultures. Not that you've put someone in there to play for tanguillos, but is playing something of theirs.
Have there been meetings and exchanges between them?
Yes, yes, yes. And you have cojones, it's amazing. In fact, come all concerts. A Madrid come all. And Mariza has organized the presentation in the Coliseum of Lisbon. There are touring the U.S.. I thought it would come three or four. In the presentation among friends we made in the study came Montse CATA, Sandra, Buika and The Shica. And some did the chorus to the other. It creates a synergy coil and Cojonudos.
Shica Javier Limón and in the video "Water mysterious' 'Women of water' |
"Even among the Flemish?
are all complementary. Montse and Genara are Roma and are close friends and they love how she sings Sandra. She has grown up listening to Monty, who was the favorite of young, cool singer. All Star is unquestionable. It's fun. If you put two singers alike, then no, but here each is of his father and mother.
And the message of Iranian women, is it part of a campaign?
is a little dedication. I understand that the media is very attractive. The disk I have not to claim anything. I do not want anyone who does not like the album buy it for that. I'm not a singer. Paco de Lucia once told me that where she sings best in the world is in Iran, better than the Flemish and better than all that are technically maximum. I wanted to go to Iran to record with a singer and I was difficult. And since it is not because I wanted to dedicate it, because it seems unfair. Like "Run times of joy 'is dedicated to the victims of 11-S just because we saw something wrong. It is a dedication to leave them sing, too, but is dedicated to those who have not already done so. Selfishness is almost musical. What about the mothers, then? What evil are in a nanny? And I tried, but it was very complicated. Like now I want to record music from the Middle East, I leave for the next album. The dedication to the Iranian women is an open window, the start of the next record in which the Iranians hope to sing. That would be the answer.
Do you think a flamenco album without the involvement of elements of other music has a place in today's market?
Total. I'm going to record new album in February with DVD: José Maya and her family The Porrina, Pepe Bean with Tamara, Duquende guitar, guitar Susi, Los Farruco ... Of course it has its place and always will. If I sing like Potito would not be looking buzukis the Mediterranean. I do it because I do not sing or play or dance. Enrique can do to have fun as hell of it, but you can spend your entire life and have fun singing soleá fine too. Formerly, only sung by a stick. Now everyone sings about everything. I think in my case is strong case, is part of my paper get off the pot, so my guitar is blue and things like this. I have that responsibility, I have thrown me up, hosts constantly hitting me and so find a way. But I love the last album Morente, pure, direct, guitar and voice only, and is a current and valid disc.
Carmen Linares on video 'Women of water. The story ' | Genara video Cortes' Women of water. The story ' | La Susi on video' Women of water. The story ' |
How do you see the health of the flamenco in this strange time of recording industry?
| | | "Flamenco can not be a victim of an" |
why I do in February this series of six or seven albums. Are all DVD and some in 3-D, with four cameras. And I want to broadcast on Canal +, on television, selling Blu-Ray ... what to do. If the disks are not selling, let us turn around and do Blue-Ray DVDs or movies to the cinemas or whatever. Flamenco can not be a victim of a format. We're screwed and is being. Give him the CD! Flamenco was long before the CD and will be later.
Is not it worrying Flamenco is happening today and it will be unregistered for the future?
That can not be. You must be registered and recorded well. That's another problem. Youtube is a big shit in the technical sense and sound. I do not like to see on Youtube Morente. I want to record in a studio with a hell of a fucking camera. And then, YouTube is a tool. But if you replaced the phonograph record, bad. Must be generated. I now have made my video clip with The Shica and daughters of the package, I've carefully worked. The only solution to this is the quality, maintain the rigor and quality is what will make a difference.
There is a crisis of format, but not talent, right?
There is no crisis of talent in flamenco. More girls than ever, you saturate. Before you had more or less, a map in his head to monitor the situation, but now is impossible. There is a lot, a lot. I guess that within forty years, when they retire Morente and Paco, yes there will be a crisis in flamenco brutal. If Paco retires someday, we will have a serious problem in flamenco, in my opinion.
By the way, and disc Paco?
Here we go. He is working on an album of song and another little thing that I can not say, but you'll know soon.
